Some people on here already know about this from other sources, but, for the benefit of those that don't...
Last night I took part in a class in which I was taken through what I would need to get my next belt (brown-stripe). At least, that's what I thought was happening!
What actually happened was that I was asked to do various things off the syllabus (some of which I needed for my next belt, and some that I knew came from earlier on in the syllabus), and, all things considered, I seemed to be doing well, and thought that maybe I was ready to take the second part of my grading (my first part was on the preceding Tuesday, when I had to take part of the class to teach some of the relative newcomers -- who were being graded then -- through their requirements; ability to give basic instructions to a class is part of the brown-stripe syllabus).
Anyway, I didn't think too much of it all until things different to the norm happened when we finished the class. It turned out that the 'refresher' was actually my real grading, and my three instructors, Paul Harris, Paul Rumble and Jarrod Gresswell, all came to the conclusion that I had done sufficiently well enough to earn my brown-stripe belt!

Well done Anthony, the best gradings occur when you dont think about grading and just perform your art to your best ability.
Keep it up but remember enjoy what you are doing, learn from your instructors, gradings will happen when you are ready and I'm sure you will go far.
;D

Well done mate, instructors can be sneaky sometimes, I have a young female student who receives surprise gradings due to having serious issues about tests

He he... yeah, nearly at the hard bit.
Hmm, is that like an NVQ style grading then??

No, I was simply under the impression that it was a refresher, but it was actually a real grading.

Congratulations on going one more step up the rank ladder!
Fantastic! The fact that you can be surprised with a grading, and still show forth the kind of quality, and effort needed to pass is a great sign to how you must apply yourself at each and every class that you train in.
Keep up the good work!
