just started using the lovely vista ultimate edition, and it actually works very well on my pc.
i keep hearing it's slow and sluggish.
the obvious here is that it works well on high end systems with at least a dual or even better a quad core cpu

Vista is a good operating system, just needs the patches to keep it running smoothly. Systems shipped with 1MB of RAM will work but after a while (as programs are loaded on over time), will slow down considerably as it really needs 2MB minimum.
Once your favourite programs are updated to become Vista friendly then things will definately look better, but at the moment too many programs are suffering with Vista for my liking!

I amaze people when I say that I've had Windows 95 working on a machine with 4MB (a 386)!
